UWGB – Google Partnership: The UWGB Google IgniteCS Program
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) Computer Science (CS) program has entered into a partnership with Google in the form of the Google IgniteCS (GICS) program for the second year in a row.
This program, sponsored and supported by Google, gives CS students a co-curricular and professional development opportunity to design, develop and deliver CS curricular modules at the K-12 level on topics such as data mining and visualization, robotics, privacy and machine learning and mobile security. These workshops are designed for students of a varying ages with the goal of expanding education and interest in the field and with a specific focus on female and minority students who are under-represented.
This year, the UWGB GICS program is housed under the new Center of Cyber-Security Education and Outreach. The focus is on reaching out to middle school and high school students and exposing them to topics ranging from basic coding to cyber-security. The UWGB GICS program, in partnership with the UWGB Phuture Phoenix program, recently (in October) hosted multiple workshop sessions for fifth graders, who visited the University. The NEW IT Alliance Newsletter published an article about this event: https://newdigstg.wpengine.com/2017/11/new-it-alliance-november-tech-upload/
For UWGB students, this is an opportunity to explore and research a range of topics or focus on a specific area of interest within their degree. A number of students who graduated or will be graduating are able to use their research and curriculum as part of their graduation capstone. This reinforces the fact that being able to teach a topic shows a thorough comprehension of the topic/subject.
We are excited to continue our curriculum research and development and are always seeking new ways to connect with middle school and high school students with the hopes of inspiring the next generation of computer science innovators.
